THE STORY BEHIND THE PORTRAIT

Few artists can paint Willie Nelson with this level of personal understanding. For Tess Frizzell, Willie isn’t just a legend — he’s part of her family’s story.

A Friendship That Spanned Generations

  • Willie Nelson slept on Tess’s grandmother Dottie West’s couch for weeks when they were all young, hungry dreamers chasing songs in Nashville.

  • Dottie recorded Willie’s early songs, and the two remained close friends until her passing.

  • Willie later recorded an entire album in honor of Tess’s uncle, country icon Lefty Frizzell, titled “To Lefty From Willie.”

  • Tess’s mother, Shelly West, played shows with Willie throughout her career.

  • And Tess?
She was known for sneaking onto Willie’s bus during those tour days.

  • One of her favorite childhood photos captures her near Willie — held by her road nanny — a treasured piece of their family timeline.

Today, that story continues through Tess’s partner, songwriter Bobby Tomberlin, whose song “Christmas Love Song” was recorded and released by Willie this year. Bobby has more songs recorded on Willie’s next album, including one that was a love song Bobby started about Tess, and Willie finished writing.

This portrait is rooted in decades of friendship, music, and intertwined legacy.
